The Pandemic Fund

The Pandemic Fund is a catalytic financing mechanism which provides important resources to advance pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response (PPR) capacities at national, regional, and global levels, with a focus on low- and middle-income countries, while incentivizing further investment. It also serves as an advocacy platform that enhances collaboration among partners and is part of a wider movement towards reaching more sustainable financing for PPR for national and global health security.

The Fund is a diverse coalition hosted by the World Bank and steered by a diverse coalition of founding donors, civil society, and other stakeholders. The World Health Organization (WHO) serves as the technical lead, providing critical advice on funding priorities and ensuring the Fund's investments align with the International Health Regulations (IHR 2005) and other globally recognized legal frameworks, using the One Health approach.

"This pandemic fund resources represents a critical investment in enhancing pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response capacities in Latin America and the Caribbean. Our region was the hardest hit during the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2022 mpox outbreak and continues to face substantial risks from the emergence and re-emergence of pathogens of epidemic and pandemic potential."

-  Dr. Jarbas Barbosa, PAHO Director

The Pandemic Fund in the Region of the Americas

The Americas are particularly vulnerable to health emergencies, largely driven by infectious diseases outbreaks and climate-related disasters.Urbanization, population growth, climate change, and migration contribute to the increasing frequency, severity, and scale of these emergencies, significantly impacting the health and well-being of its populations.

The Pandemic Fund’s Governing Board has approved grants under its first and second rounds of funding allocations, aimed to boost resilience to future pandemics.

PAHO is leading the implementation of 7 of the selected projects targeting countries in the Americas. These projects aim to protect vulnerable communities and reduce the health, social, and economic impacts of epidemics and pandemics.
